Loading up a new Win8 box over two days and, on Day 2, I installed the Win8 version for Epson Artisan printers, and kept loading graphics programs that would use that printer.

Somewhere along the way, I noticed by WinExplorer - er, FileExplorer file manager - crashing, upon entering certain folders. I'd be dropped back to the Desktop and, no matter where I started FileExplorer, I'd get bombed out with a quick flash and back to the Desktop.

I went backwards and uninstalled the three graphics packages. Reboots each time - just to be sure. But the crashes persisted. Then finally, Epson's Win8 Artisan driver.

Voila. No more crashes.

I'd seen other threads about FileExplorer crashing and there were discussions about Video Drivers (often, unproductive) but I'd forgotten that Printer Drivers and Video Drivers share Font Building and Color Generation techniques long ago in the Windows Platform world. I wonder if those Video-Driver "solutions" weren't really part of some printer-driver problem?

Anyway... all solved on my end. I kept the Artisan on a Win7 box, and did its SHARE, and let Win8 use whatever fragments of that driver it needs. Solved my Crash Problem, but not the head-scratching.

Thanks for sharing, glad you were able to sort out your problem and resolve it.
As an aside, not saying that this had anything to do with your particular problem, historically there has been as issue with certain file types causing explorer crashes when it would make an attempt to generate thumbnails rather than icons.
I remember that .mkv files I believe was one of the more recent file types generating this type of issue and if you changed your folder options / view, to "always show icons, never thumbnails" it actually resolved the issue.
Not sure that, that remains a problem with windows 8 file explorer, just thought I would pass it along for posterity.
Regards
Randy

TROUB, thanks for this note, too. Yes, "generating graphics" could certainly be that. I generally "live in the world of DETAILS views" and do my best to revert back to DETAILS from a Graphics-filled directory, but not always - my laziness remains, and I'll bomb-out and leave a View in that. And it's usually Larger Thumbnails, too! Argh.

Your concept riles my anger once again, though. "Why the ____ are they adding CRAP to an OS - Apps Crap, Applet Crap - rather than giving us a GOOD OS, period!!

I mean, I still can't gather why Internet Explorer has QUICK LAUNCH attached to it, or why ANY browser is crammed down an OS's digestive system! "Just give us GOOD file systems, good memory handling, good hooks into using the OS's Basics, good Driver Basics - and leave Apps to App Developers so we don't have finger-pointing! Grrr.

The schizophrenia of Win8 only exacerbates this - is it a Start Screen, or is it a Desktop? Is it a touchscreen without keyboards? (Then why all the bleepin' new Keystroke Combos? (ALT F N used to be Folder-New under Win95-98, then it became ALT F W under Win2000... now it's CTRL-SHIFT-N... sheesh.) How can it be a so-called Touchscreen System when ALT F4 is the easiest way to do SHUTDOWNs. Where's the ALT F4 keys on a WinPhone, by the way?

Why is an OS dealing with the constant nags in the money-making (Apps Store) realm?!! I guess I should be happy enough that Office10 & 13 don't have Ads popping up on every toolbar button. Oh wait - those easily accessed buttons are now hidden away so Menus are practically as useful as a bleepin RIBBON. Grrr...

But ask me how I REALLY feel...
