I thought that Avira was the best antivirus, but after I tested a lot of antivirus software I found out that the best one is Bitdefender Total Security 2013 - beta because of its feature autopilot that guarantees no pop-ups or notifications and also provide a good virus protection.

Referring back to the OP for Free antivirus. I have tried and found these all run OK in Windows 8:

    Avast: Panda: Avira: AVG

Also the following, but they have a poor reputation for detection:
    Comodo: PCTools (Free): Rising

And not forgetting MSE is still available, but has become redundant in Windows 8.

I would choose AVG FREE, it's ok for Windows 8.

AVG caused many problems early in W7 and that scared many away from it. Glad to hear your not having problems with it. Previous to MSE, I used Avira Antivir with good results.

On Windows 8, I don't feel it is necessary to install an antivirus at all. The OS itself is pretty safe and as vulnerable as Windows 7 was in the past. If i needed to install one, I'd install AVG.

AVG is an excellent antivirus to install on the PC. However, Windows 8 is pretty safe with its own built-in firewall. Better safe than sorry though. :)
