My installation of Kaspersky AntiVirus will not complete when I try in Windows 8.

Which (free) antivirus can I install which is compatible and will work well?

    Please excuse my English!

It is already installed - Windows Defender. There was previously a separate program called MSE, which need to be downloaded. It has now been incorporated into Windows 8. It is rated quite high on the benchmarks.

Most Current malware apps will run under WCP but older versions often have trouble.

I am using Windows 8 Defender and it protects me. No need for anything else!

Different things work for different people. Personally I would not rely on defender by itself. It is a jungle out there. grin

As Maddox says. It is a Beta. Not a bad idea to test out what is on offer, before worrying too much about third party alternatives.

I would adding AVG AntiVirus, I'm not too sure if it would work, but it's worth a shot I suppose. ;)

NOSD32 and NORTON work perfectly fine with windows 8. Microsoft had a list of anti-viruses that was certified to work with windows 8 CP, but i lost the link.

You already have Windows Defender installed, but if you are not happy with the protection it provides I recommend using Avira.

It is free, it offers a good protection, little resources used and low false-positives. Give it a try.

I find Avast 7 works just as well in Windows 8.

I have installed AVG and it works. So far so good. Until someone comes up with a virus that can get through AVG's defences. I also have Advanced Windows System installed just to sure.

I'm currently installing AVG free on my Windows 8 now, I hope that it runs as smoothly as it did on my vista.

Windows Defender aka MSE because it's prone to be for all Windows operating systems.

AVG free is perfect--as everyone else claimed. It provides comprehensive technology for a new operating system. Everything works fine on my consumer preview version. If you can spend a few more bucks, I would recommend Norton Internet Security or 360.

McAfee Norton and AVG are the three AV's, I will not be installing. I have a bad history with McAfee and Norton. Out of the past four years I have been reading forums such as this one, there has been too many horror stories about AVG. And that is not to mention my own bad experience with AVG.

    I'm currently using MSE.

Why doesn't MSE work with windows 8? What is the preferred antivirus for windows 8?

MSE has been merged with Defender Jim. I was using Avast but now I just stick with Defender and Malwarebytes..

You should definitely give Bitdefender Total Security 2013 ( beta for the moment ) a chance. It is the best antivirus software for Windows 8 in my opinion and it is really slim, fast and the autopilot is awesome.
