I am downloading the Windows 8 consumer preview linked to from this site, but it is an ESD file.

What do I do once I have saved it? Is it like an ISO file that I can mount?

I did quite a bit of searching and can't find out what an ESD file is (at least not in this context) - so I'd switch over and use the official ISO's instead :).

    Hi Ian,

    The site looks great.

I don't know what an esd file is either.

Thanks - really glad you like it! :)

I stopped the .esd file download once the ISO's were released, so I didn't get a chance to check out if they could be mounted. I wonder if it's just some internal renaming from MS of an ISO/VHD or something similar - I guess it doesn't matter too much now though.

I think it is Eight Setup Download.

I would hazard a guess it will burn the iso for you - using isoburn.exe if you are on 7 - or imapi if you are using xp/vista.

I will extract the install wim and apply it - can't be bothered doing the windows setup thing.

I also like to select my own o/s drive letter - as far as I know you can't do that using windows setup routine.

(The edit post pop up boxes look fab , too)

Can you give me the reference to that link, I cannot find it?

But. An ESD file is not an ISO in disguise. It is a "ExpertScan Survey Document file", from AutoData Systems.
I have never tried it, but I think it can only be opened with their software.

Microsoft uses the ESD file format to deliver install files needed.
ESD stands for Electronic Software Delivery,
    the Windows
    install.esd file
    contains the usual Windows
    install.wim file
    (WIM = Windows Imaging),
    encrypted and compressed.
    Install.wim file,
    in its turn,
contains everything needed for a complete Windows installation.
