I was trying the personalization options from the "Charms" strip and turned my desktop background to black with white and blue letters. How do I get back to the Windows 8 default settings?

Not certain what you meant by Win 8 default settings.

If you right click at an open spot of the desktop > select Personalize .................
Do you see the previous background picture(s) ?
If yes, pick one of them.

I did what David says to remove the wallpaper that came as default theme, nice but not what I like to have.

I realized however that Windows 8 doesn't come with all those wallpapers that previous versions used to include, at least not the single-language my computer came with.

Besides the landscape wallpaper there is also a plain blue wallpaper, but if you need something different, you will need to get it first from Microsoft or probably from your images gallery.
