Just receive a notice that MS TechNet subscriptions will end on the 31st August.
Subscribers with active accounts may continue to access program benefits until their current subscription period concludes.
    MSDN subs will continue

Thanks for the heads up Dave, I've just got the same e-mail.

Is there any drawback to having MSDN compared to Technet - from what I can tell it is more inclusive so shouldn't really those with access to both?

Well, that is the good news. It is apparent that discussion has been going on behind the scenes. Just recently MSDN announced that the gaps between the two subscriptions (MSDN was lacking) have been closed. So, now they are pretty much identical, but MSDN costs more for the normal subscribers. Luckily, when I got my MVP status some years ago, I opted for the MSDN one, so, for the moment, all is well.

    New email again today.
So if I'm reading this correctly it looks like we get an extra 90 day kicker before they turn out the lights.

Ok. Got this in the email a short time ago.

We have extended your TechNet Subscription
    for an additional 90 days.

On July 1, 2013, Microsoft announced the retirement of the TechNet Subscriptions program. Since then, we’ve been listening to your feedback on how we can better support the IT professional community through this transition.

    Additional information

More background on Microsoft’s decision to retire the TechNet Subscription service and the implications for current subscribers is available on the TechNet Subscriptions FAQ.
