I just formatted my drive and reinstalled windows 8. my question is: before updating to Windows 10 in a few days, should I make sure windows 8 is completely up to date with all available Windows updates, or can I just go ahead and upgrade to 10 when it is available? (this includes Installing 8.1... my 8 installation cd is for 8 and I am being prompted to download/install 8.1. It would be nice to avoid a couple hours worth of updating if possible.)

thanks in advance for the advice!

I don't believe there is an upgrade path to Windows 10 from Windows 8.
I think you're going to have to do the upgrade first and I'm pretty sure that, that will have to be fully updated to include all the latest 8.1 updates.
