You should get 8.1 from the Windows Store for the laptop. Then run Windows Update to get the Windows 8.1 Update they released last week. 8.1 is free and has a lot of under the hood fixes.

8.1 is free? Well, I will update then :) Windows 8 has a lot of bugs, maybe 8.1 has resolved them.

Yeah, 8.1 is an improvement, compared to 8. Make sure to run Windows Update until none appear. Then 8.1 will show up in the store. Disable your antivirus until 8.1 is installed. Then run Windows Update again after 8.1 is installed, so it get's the recently released 8.1 Update. You'll see the Windows Store icon on the desktop's taskbar when the 8.1 Update is installed. The 8.1 update is KB2919355. It's basically a Service Pack 1 for 8.1. Microsoft just stopped calling them Service Pack's.

Your welcome. How do you like Windows 8.1 Update 1 so far? The start menu is supposedly coming back in 8.1 Update 2 in the fall or in Windows 9.

I like it too. Though, I already had the boot to desktop in 8, as I use Start8 and have a real start menu.

Is Start8 a free software? Is it compatible with Windows 8.1? ;)

No, it's $5.00. Here's a link to Stardock's site. All their Windows 8 software works in 8.1. Decor8 customizes the Start screen (add's extra wallpapers, etc). ModernMix open's up the Modern/Start screen app's on windows on the desktop. http://www.stardock.com/products/

I almost forgot. Here's a tip for the 8.1 Start screen. Don't click on the x at the top right of the screen to clocse modern app's. Use the old way of dragging them to the bottom of the screen and waiting for them to flip. The new way leaves them still running in the background. The tip I gave you closes them completely.

Thanks for the information. Close them with ''x'' was more comfortable, but if this method does not really close them, then it's better to use the classic method! :)

Normally I don't like to buy software either, but $5 for Start 8 is pretty good. I use it with Modern Mix, which I think was another $4. I had hoped that the Start Menu was going to be in Update 1.
That way I can have the best of both the old as well as the new.

If you close them with the X and open the task manager, you'll see them still running there in the background. a website you may want to follow is www.windows8core.com . It has a lot of 8 & 8.1 tip's. www.7tutorials.com also has a lot of 8/8.1 tips, as does www.howtogeek.com. How To Geek cover's a lot of different stuff, not just Windows..

Your welcome. Those site's all have a lot of good legitimate tip's. Ask VG does, too. www.askvg.com. They aren't like a lot of the bogus site's out there. They are reliable, as is Maximum PC, etc.
