once I updated to windows 8 I noticed that I was missing a ton of space. I looked around and I couldn't find out where it was at. I have an 1tb hard drive and only 400gb is free. if anyone can tell me how to find the problem please help.

Try doing a search for disk cleanup and run it. I can't remember how it is in 8, but you may have to run it a second time like in Windows 7 and click on clean up system files on the 2nd run. Make sure you put a check mark next to "Files Discarded By Windows Upgrade". It could be left over files from your previous version of Windows or something weird may have happened during the upgrade.

Have a look, also, and see if you have a folder named Win.old, or similar. It can be deleted if you have no wish to refer back to the contents of your previous OS.

The second run of disk cleanup with a check mark on the box on Files Discarded By Windows/ or something similar to that wording get's reid of windows.old. It could also be that his drive could've also gotten partitioned somehow or a virus got in somehow.
