Kaspersky have finally released a version of KIS 2014 that works with Windows 8.1. Until now I've had to use Bit Defender - but I'm sure that there are some here that are existing Kaspersky license holders.

You'll need to upgrade KIS 2014 to the "patch B" variant to get it working with Windows 8.1. There are more details on their forum here:

    Thanks for the news.

But I have a question. How did you managed to Install KIS 2014 on Windows 8.1? I've heard you cant install it On Windows 8.1 yet; cause the KIS 2014 Installer is not compatible with Win 8.1 yet?

Here's one reply from the page you mentioned in your post:

"When can I get the installer for Windows 8.1?

As you know, I can't install KIS 2014 using the link provided here: Product Updates, until a compatible executable version is provided for direct/new installation."

I am running Windows 8.1 Pro RTM and I have legit KIS 2013 License.

    thanks

Maybe he installed KIS 2014 before upgrading to 8.1, and then applied the Patch B to get it working again...

Yeah, I went the 8>8.1 route to get it working - although there's a full installer available now:

    http://downloads-am.kasperskyamericas.com/files/main/en/kis2014_14.0.0.4651abEN_5096.exe

However, I've been getting poor browsing performance since installing KIS 2014. Apparently this was quite common before patch B, but many users (including myself) have found that the problem continues, even after restarts/updates. I'm sure it will be fixed soon, but it's irritating enough that I'd have delayed the upgrade had I known about it.

Well, I'm not too surprised. I read this thread, and ran the three I have available on Windows 8.1

It still confirms that for lightweight protection, Defender wins.

The pictures are snaps from the task manager. CPU: Memory: Disk

Curious that Kaspersky is the only one that shows actual CPU usage?

The tests from av-comparatives and other such sites state that win defender is worst in terms of protection & performance...

I need an Internet security which wouldn't compromise systems performance, speed and stability. Though I have quite good config; Core i7, 8Gigs RAM, SSD, GTX670 etc but when I play games then i guess these little things does matter. I wanted to installed Kaspersky 2014 but its not yet compatible with 8.1..

Is there any other IS compatible with 8.1?

My post shows Kaspersky 2014 on 8.1 See Ian's post (No #4) Eset ditto.

But. Defender is a basic virus protection program. Kaspersky is a full suite, as is Eset. Kaspersky has a "game" mode, which will probably interest you.
I don't think there is a great deal of difference, worth considering, between the "free" programs.

Did you upgrade 8 to 8.1 with being Kaspersky Installed? or You installed it after you upgraded to 8.1?

I installed it directly to 8.1, with their own updated version. (As Ian's Link)

Interesting stats Dave - thanks for testing them out! I do like Defender, but the extra features from KIS are worth the overhead for me :)

Oddly, KIS seems to be behaving itself when it comes to web browsing today - so I'm not sure if they've rolled out another update, or if I've just not used it enough yet this session.

There is no speed deprivation that I have noticed. Maybe a benchmarker would show one up?
