I have found that this is the only game that won't work in my Windows 8.1 - worked ok in Windows 8.
I have seen various others with the same complaint. They have tried complete reinstalls etc. The game starts to the select a flight screen then when one selects "fly now" the screen goes blank and the music continues for a few seconds the all quits.
    Any suggested fixes?

I am running Win 8.1 Pro.
I installed the MS Flight Sim X trial version just to test your scenario.
When I tried to install, an error message appeared, forgot what it said, then before I could do anything, another message popped up saying it was running it in compatibility mode. After that, install completed and it played.

In light of that, try to run the program in compatibility mode......

Right click at the flight sim shortcut or its exe file > click Properties > click Compatibility tab at the top > under Compatibility mode, check the box " Run this program in compatibility mode for:" > click the pointer and select Windows8 > click OK when done.

OR, you can click the Run Compatibility troubleshooter to find out what is the problem.

Tried all of that - didn't work.
I found another program (security camera software) that worked on windows 8 but not on windows 8.1.
I am getting ready to go back and wait for them to get it "right".
It is interesting that Microsoft Money from 2004 work fine.

It would take over 1/2 a day by the time I add on all the extras. Just not worth it. I have removable hard drives and I can just pop in Windows 8, 7, Vista or XP. I know it worked in Windows 8.
I have had a few programs that need a kick - worked in a previous version But Flight Sim (Microsoft's own program) is the only one that doesn't work.
    Thanks for your help.
I would hope that there is a fix to Windows 8.1 to allow this popular simulator to work. I will keep trying.

Sorry I am no help on this matter.

Just one puzzle...... Why the MS Flight Sim X trial version works in my Win 8.1 Pro?

Have you tried asking the people in MS Flight Sim support forums?

Anyway, good luck for your search for answer.

I went back and checked it in Windows 8, Windows 7 and XP - all ok. Won't run in 8.1 so I will try reinstalling it - will probably take a day.

I reinstalled it about 6 times. Found that my 182rg add-on screwed it up.
I finally added the scenery update and the 2 other updates. It runs but when I quit it it crashes.
I reinstalled a backup od windows 8 on another hard drive and it ran ok - even quit properly.

I am sorry that I am of no help to you.
Have you tried asking the people in FSX forums?
They could have a better understand of your issue than us since they do play FSX.

I have been reading all I can find and it seems to be a common problem. I assume that Microsoft will sweep it under the rug as the have in the past wit other problems with their products on upgrades. Oh well!!
    Thanks for trying.

are there any good FREE alternatives to flight sim X?

Lately ive gotten it into my head that i want to get my PPL. Its very expensive and im sure id like it but, i want to get a feel for what the controls of a plane LOOK and Function like. I know its not the same as actually flying, but its a start right?
