Sorry about the miss spelled word Notification in heading.

I have a new laptop that came with McAfee antivirus.
I'm running Win 8.1 with all the latest updates.
I uninstalled McAfee using the Windows Uninstall area and all went well and rebooted.

I now have MS Defender but something is not right in the registry.
I do not see the Defender icon in the lower part of my desktop as normal.
Oh I'm using ClassicShell to give me back my Win7 desktop and is running well.

OK back to no MS Defender Icon in the notification area.
So I figured it must be turned off and checked the notification Flag/icon area.
I did not have anything related the MS Defender so I was unable to turn anything on.

In MS Defender under SETTING all looks good there and yes I have the check box checked for real time protection.
I have turned it off and back with no changes.

I have read others have had this issue online but resolution on how to correct.
I'm presently running a sfc/scannow to see if it find and corrects anything. It finished with no problems.

    My Issues
    1. MS Defender is running but not sure if will auto update definitions so I guess I just have to wait.

    2. I want to see the icon in the notification area so I know I'm on and protected.

    3. Is their a way to uninstall and reinstall MS Defender in Win 8.1?
I was told no it was a part of Win8 and not a separate program.

Can anyone with a little more expertise give me some suggestions?

    Thanks

nope... it just doesn't show in the notification area anymore.
    you can type
    defender
at the start screen and it'll show up but otherwise, it's just there in the background.

    1. Go back to Windows Defender window ( Control Panel > Windows defender ) > select Update tab at the top.
It will tell you whether your WD is set to automatic update.

    2. You can NOT have WD in notification area.
Only alternative is to pin it to the taskbar.
P.S. Notification area is located at the bottom RIGHT hand side. Also called system tray area.
Taskbar is referred to as the long strip at the bottom of the screen.

    3. WD, as you already been told, is part of the operating system. As such, it cannot be uninstalled nor re-installed.

Thank you all for the information.
I can just imagine what they will do in Win10 when it comes out. LOL
Yes I do understand the different bars and what I was wondering about why it didn't show up in the notification area.
    Thanks

RE : I can just imagine what they will do in Win10 when it comes out.
I have since Oct 1st, installed Windows 10 Technical Preview. It is a "beta" version, meant to be "test driven" to fish out bugs and glitches. So far, it run quite well, though not impressive in my opinion.

WD is not supposed to be included in Notification area.

I have also been playing with Win10 Preview for a few days. Not impressed.
