How do you configure automatic file scans for Windows Defender? I am not sure if I have it configured, and since it is dangerous to run without it on, I want to turn it on.

If you look in your Task Scheduler (taskschd.msc) expand Task Scheduler Libarary, expand Microsoft, expand Windows, scroll down to Windows Defender and select it, I believe you'll likely see a Scheduled Scan already set up.
It uses the MpCmdRun.exe command line utility found here C:\Program Files\Windows Defender and runs, more or less, silently in the background.

I suppose if you felt that, that didn't meet your needs you could play around with the native Task Scheduler and setup an additional scheduled task.
