Win 8.1 Pro x64. Trying to start into Safe Mode with Networking. At the safe mode screen there are nine choices for start up method. The number 5 or F5 is supposed to restart with networking, but it's starting w/o an internet connection. My attempts to get it bring a message that I have to start Windows normally to get networking. What am I missing? Thanks

Can you logon to normal mode ?
    If yes, do so.
Go to Start screen > search box > type msconfig > click msconfig.exe > click Boot tab at top > check Safe boot > click Network > OK when done > reboot.

Adding .... After you are done with Safe Mode /Networking and while still in safe mode, repeat the steps above and undo the checkmarks.

Many thanks. Glad I decided not to keep waiting another day for an answer on the other Windows Eight forum.

Btw, keystrokes on this site works with delay.

You still have one issue to resolve.......
Why can't you get to Safe Mode w/ Networking the "normal way" ?
In Win 8, MS geniuses decide to make our life more difficult. It takes a round and round detour to get to Safe Mode.
Have a look at the following tutorial on how to boot into safe mode :

Guess I'm missing your point now. The first method didn't work for me, while the second did, per your earlier post.

    Strange.
You will have to investigate why you cannot. Needless to say, something is wrong with your computer.
Perhaps doing a system file check ( sfc /scannow ) is in order.
Know how to do that ?

If you mean sfc/ scannow or run Yamicsoft's Windows Manager repair module, done those already.

If so, I don't know how to help you any more.
    Sorry.

    I must apologize.
You are right about Safe Mode with Networking.
The first method does not work.
I used my Win 8.1 Pro and tried it. When I got to select #5 ( enable safe mode with networking ), it led me to safe mode but the IE did not work. It said I was not connected to the internet.

    Another bug in Windows 8/8.1.

I have found out why I could not have internet connection when I selected Safe Mode with Networking.

I am using a laptop with wifi.
In safe mode, at least in my case, wifi is disconnected. Hence no internet.
I connected it to the modem, Ethernet turned on automatically, and I had internet connection.

Does that apply to you ?

Between cable modem and desktop computer, the ethernet cable goes via a router's port, but is not using the router's wifi capabilities; the router is there for a laptop. I've assumed it's sort of like plugging a component's power cord into the back of an audio receiver that has an extra plug instead of the wall outlet, i.e., a circuit that doesn't involve (bypasses) the receiver's electronics.
