I have a Dell Inspiron Laptop i7 processor 8GB RAM, when I shutdown the power light stays on, so far the only way to turn it off is to hold down the power button until it goes off. I know Windows 8 hibernates for fast startup but I don't think it's that as if I press the power button to start nothing happens, so at the moment I just have to hold it down for complete shutdown.

Any help or suggestions on this would be much appreciated. Thank you

Problem solved! I installed the items from the .zip file in the thread "How do I shutdown Windows8" and that has solved the problem I now right click the screen to shutdown which is much easier and I get a proper shutdown, Thanks again for those files.:)

CoolJohn B, I am experiencing the same problem with Windows 7. Do you think the solution is the same? if yes, would you be able to tell me how to get those files?

Davehc, thank you very much. But I have Windows 7, I do not think the problem I have would be solved with these utilities, no? The computer shutsdown, but the powerlight stays on, and it does not completely shutdown.

sounds like something is corupted in your installation. have you tried shutdown command from run? if that doesn't work you might have to reinstall. have you checked windows 7 forums?
    hope that helps

Sorry. As you are on a Windows 8 dedicated forum, I assumed that is what you were concerned with.
